BAROQUE STYLE

The decadence of the Baroque style, in which ornate furnishings were layered against paneled walls, painted ceilings, stately chandeliers and, above all, gilding, expressed the power of the church and monarchy through design that celebrated excess. And its influence was omnipresent — antique Baroque furniture was created in the first design style that truly had a global impact.

Theatrical and lavish, Baroque was prevalent across Europe from the 17th to mid-18th century and spread around the world through colonialism, including in Asia, Africa and the Americas. While Baroque originated in Italy and achieved some of its most fantastic forms in the late-period Roman Baroque, it was adapted to meet the tastes and materials in each region. French Baroque furniture informed Louis XIV style and added drama to Versailles. In Spain, the Baroque movement influenced the elaborate Churrigueresque style in which architecture was dripping with ornamental details. In South German Baroque, furniture was made with bold geometric patterns.

Compared to Renaissance furniture, which was more subdued in its proportions, Baroque furniture was extravagant in all aspects, from its shape to its materials.

Allegorical and mythical figures were often sculpted in the wood, along with motifs like scrolling floral forms and acanthus leaves that gave the impression of tangles of dense foliage. Novel techniques and materials such as marquetry, gesso and lacquer — which were used with exotic woods and were employed by cabinetmakers such as André-Charles Boulle, Gerrit Jensen and James Moore — reflected the growth of international trade. Baroque furniture characteristics include a range of decorative elements — a single furnishing could feature everything from carved gilded wood to gilt bronze, lending chairs, mirrors, console tables and other pieces a sense of motion.

Jacques Garcia Decorating In The French Style Book by Franck Ferrand 1999
Located in North Hollywood, CA
Jacques Garcia Decorating In The French Style Hardcover Book by Franck Ferrand 1999. Jacques Garcia Decorating In The French Style, is a reference in term of French Decoration Style.Pubished in 2005, this version is the Original publication which was later modified. After designing private interiors for distinguished clients worldwide, Jacques Garcia subsequently set about decorating some of the most popar establishments in Paris - from the Hotel Costes, the Laduree tearoom on the Champs Elysees and the new Fouquet's, to the brasserie La Grande Armee and L'Avenue. But his masterpiece is the Norman chateau Le Champ de Bataille, in which every detail contributes to the formation of a new style: the Garcia style.Jacques Garcia is one of the most fashionable interior designers in France today. Parisians flock to the tables of the exclusive Hotel Costes he designed near the place Vendome, and the famous tea room Laduree on the Champs Elysees to dine and be seen in his elegant and atmospheric fin-de-siecle salons. Garcia counts among his private clients royalty, actors, piticians and businessmen from New York to Beirut, but he is just as much at home refurbishing museums (musee Carnavalet, musee de la Vie Romantique) and palace hotels and casinos in Deauville or Baden-Baden. Neoclassicism, Orientalism and Empire Revival are his decorative landmarks. In deliberate opposition to the post-modern spaces designed by wunderkind Philippe Starck in the early 90s, Garcia is passionate about the past, but his is not a dry historicism. He is a master at mixing texture, pattern and cor. His re-created rooms seem to bear the traces of generations, but are in fact the product of his inspired and irreverent imagination and attention to detail. The magnificent, ongoing restauration and decoration of his Normandy chateau, Champs de Bataille, attracts visitors from the world over and is a monument to his art and creativity.Stunningly illustrated, this sumptuous vume will appeal to anyone interested in interior decoration and provides a privileged look into the exclusive world of French elegance and style. In mid-career, Jacques Garcia invites us to explore an oeuvre in continuous development in which the marvels of the past have been revisited with an eye to the present. A magician of mood, Garcia is expert at keeping spectators spellbound. Here, extensively illustrated, is the first work entirely devoted to this outstanding interior designer. In it we share the joys to be derived from a certain art of living a la francaise, in the timeless tradition of the "grand style". A thirty-year career has made Jacques Garcia a worldwide name in interior design in the French tradition. In Paris, chic crowds flock to his celebrated Hétel Costes and Ladurée tearoom, and to his many fin de siécle brasseries. Garcia's designs also grace the interiors of the Musée Carnavalet and the Musée de la Vie Romantique and his most recent tour de force is the restoration of Paris Hotel Mansart. Garcia's most ambitious project to date, the refurbishment of the Chateau du Champ...

19th Century, J. Florenz Wien Chrome Steel Austrian Balance, 11 Brass Weights
Located in Vigonza, Padua
19th century, chrome steel Austrian balance, by J. Florenz Wien, 11 brass weights, 5 kg. This precious antique table scale was from the famous Caffè Florian in Venice Caffè Florian is a historic café in the city of Venice, located under the arcades of the Procuratie Nuove in Piazza San Marco. It is the oldest Italian coffee and the oldest coffee in the world. It was inaugurated on December 29, 1720 by Floriano Francesconi with the name of Alla Venezia Trionfante, but immediately the Venetians simply said “andemo da Florian-let's go to Florian”, from the name of the owner in the Venetian dialect. Since then it has continued its daily coffee business uninterruptedly to the present day, becoming a favorite destination for Venetians, Italians and foreigners. Floriano Francesconi inspired the character of Ridolfo in Carlo Goldoni's coffee shop. Giacomo Casanova courted the ladies there and Carlo Goldoni entered as a boy. Famous people such as Gasparo Gozzi, Giuseppe Parini, Silvio Pellico, Lord Byron, Ugo...

19th Century Italian Bronze Altar Candlestick, Custom Shade, Now Electrified
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
19th Century Italian Bronze Altar Candlestick, Custom Shade, Now Electrified A 19th-century Italian bronze altar candlestick is now elegantly transformed into a lamp with a custom shade and electrification. This finely cast piece features gilt angel heads and inset patinated vignettes of saints, resting on a triangular scroll-footed base. Standing at an impressive 48 inches high with the shade, this lamp is a striking addition to any interior. The lamp measures 35 inches high to the top of the socket and 32 inches high to the top of the bobeche of the candlestick. The custom portrait shade adds to its charm, measuring 14 inches high, 11 inches wide, and 5 inches deep. The sturdy triangular base measures 11 inches deep, providing a solid foundation for this historic piece. The lamp is composed of two items: the lamp base and the shade, both designed to complement each other beautifully. The bronze candlestick retains its original intricate detailing, highlighted by the gilt angel heads and saintly vignettes, while the custom shade adds a touch of contemporary functionality without compromising the antique's integrity. This electrified 19th-century Italian bronze altar candlestick lamp...
