About the Item

Antique baroque church liturgical vessel, open Ciborium, sanctuary lamp, Aspersoria. Late 18th century Italian Baroque open Ciborium, Sanctuary lamp or Aspersoria is made in silver plated brass and is decorated with three ormolu winged angel heads. Extensive liturgical use over a few centuries has left some expected bumps and dents on the delicate vessel. The heavy silver plated finishing has preserved this Ciborium very well. Condition is fair. Base is reconnected. Body has some dents. Inset is missing. Nevertheless it is a beautiful and very decorative ecclesiastical piece. Measurements: height 10.75” x diameter 9” Weight: 1lbs 13 oz.

It represents the biblical scene of Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem for the census. Multiple figures surround the center in a well balanced setting. Rich, deep color and great patina, which developed over about 400 years, make this piece of art exceptional. The panel is mounted on a later dusty rose velvet backing. Condition: Small part of backdrop on right is missing. Joseph’s left hand is missing.
