About the Item
Rare Dutch Travel planetarium in a tin can.
Anonymous, early 19th century.
A planetarium is a model or installation that shows the movements of the planets around the sun according to their actual orbits and speeds.
The tin contains a complete model of our solar system. The sun and the planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus, along with some of their moons, are attached to the extendable arms.
This miniature planetarium was used for educational purposes in the 19th century.
Only one other example is known to exist, in the Eise Eisinga Planetarium in Franeker.
