About the Item

This vintage four-panel Chinese screen features a richly painted scene of cranes, flowering branches, and ornamental vases set against a deep black ground. Executed in layered pigments and gold accents, the surface is decorated in a traditional style that evokes the visual language of Chinese lacquerware, enhanced with subtle craquelure and textural patina that speak to its age. A series of small brass nailheads frame each panel, adding structure and definition to the composition. The central panels depict an elegant gathering of cranes amidst lotus blossoms and flowering trees, while birds in flight animate the scene above. Flanking borders feature symmetrical arrangements of floral vases, pomegranates, and fruiting vines — all painted in warm tones of gold, ivory, rose, and ochre. The overall effect is both intricate and meditative, with symbolic references to longevity, abundance, and natural harmony. The reverse is finished in solid black with a repeating motif of golden botanical medallions, allowing the screen to stand beautifully from either side. Both decorative and architectural, this screen would bring a refined presence to an interior, whether used as a room divider, wall-mounted artwork, or backdrop in a living or dining space.

Black Lacquer Screen with Cranes and Gold Leaf, Four-Panel Room Divider
Located in Yonkers, NY
A striking display of artistry, this Chinese lacquered folding screen showcases a mesmerizing composition of red-crowned cranes in flight against a golden backdrop. The four-panel construction features a dynamic arrangement of cranes, their detailed plumage accentuated by subtly raised lacquer outlines, lending a dimensional quality to the artwork. The luminous gold ground, possibly applied with gold leaf or gilded foil, creates a radiant contrast to the deep black lacquer frame. Delicate hand-painted floral motifs soften the edges, introducing a refined decorative element. On the reverse, an equally elegant painted landscape unfolds, featuring songbirds perched among flowering branches and lotus blossoms. This dual-sided design enhances versatility, allowing the screen to function as both a decorative statement piece and a functional room divider. Whether placed as a dramatic backdrop in a dining room, used as an ornate headboard...

Vintage Four-Panel Black Lacquer Folding Screen with Hand-Painted Crane Motif
Located in Yonkers, NY
This striking four-panel folding screen, crafted in mid-20th-century China, marries graphic modernity with timeless decorative motifs. Each panel’s upper edge undulates to create a sculptural, multi-level silhouette, while the deep black lacquer ground provides a dramatic backdrop for the carefully rendered scene. Two graceful cranes—painted in soft whites with red-tipped crowns—stand poised in concentric gold-line ripples, their long legs and outstretched wings rendered in subtly shaded brushwork that conveys both strength and serenity. Surrounding the birds, abstract reeds and ribbon-like forms sweep across the panels in gradients of teal, lavender, and gold, suggesting stylized waterways and wind-blown foliage. Unobtrusive brass hinges allow the screen to extend into a full, bold arc or collapse flat for easy storage. Measuring approximately 80½″ high by 80½″ wide overall, it is substantial enough to define a seating area, screen an entryway, or serve as a moody focal wall. Surface wear—including fine lacquer crazing and minor scuffs—speaks to decades of use and imbues the piece with authentic vintage character. Whether displayed in a minimalist loft, an Art Deco–inspired interior, or alongside antique furnishings, this black-lacquer heron screen...
