Exemplary George II Carved Giltwood Firescreen in the Manner of William Kent

About the Item

An extraordinary and beautiful firescreen made for a fire place of monumental size for a very wealthy patron. Probably to a design by William Kent and made during in his lifetime. The carved pine frame of exquisite detailing, with red clay bole and gesso and then covered in gold leaf. The female mask to the upper shoulder each portrays a unique personality. Set within the screen is a panel of 16th century silk and petit point English stump work of fabulous quality and retaining strong bright colours. With some depletions and fraying. The feet with acanthus leaf scrolling and with lion masks - each with a toothy smile – set within in the nape of each. The carving on this screen is exceptionally fine, every element can be found in William Kent’s known designs and this is of such quality and in excellent original condition. Dimensions are: 37 inches wide, 19 inches deep and 54 inches high. For metric please multiply by 2.5
