About the Item

Vintage Chinese Six-Panel Screen with Cranes and Bamboo Gilt Background, C. 1980 A striking vintage Chinese six-panel folding screen, hand-painted on both sides with auspicious imagery and richly layered symbolism. Each panel measures 18 inches wide, forming a dramatic 108-inch overall span by 84 inches high. On the front, against a luminous gold ground, elegant red-crowned cranes are depicted among pine trees, flowering shrubs, and ornamental rocks. In Chinese culture, cranes (he) are emblems of longevity, peace, and noble spirit, while the pine tree (song) represents resilience and eternal life. Together, they form the classic auspicious pairing songhe changchun (“pine and crane, eternal spring”), a blessing for enduring vitality. The rocks and peonies add further layers of symbolic meaning, standing for stability and prosperity. The reverse is painted in bold contrast: a minimalist composition of bamboo rendered in gold on a black lacquer ground. Bamboo (zhu) is a Confucian symbol of upright character, flexibility, and perseverance. It is one of the revered “Four Gentlemen” of Chinese painting (alongside plum, orchid, and chrysanthemum), representing the scholar’s ideal virtues. The dual imagery makes the screen versatile: one side opulent and celebratory, the other restrained and meditative. Both sides reflect the enduring Chinese tradition of embedding philosophy, poetry, and blessings into decorative arts. This large-scale screen is both functional and highly decorative, ideal as a room divider, wall display, or statement piece in an interior blending Asian artistry with modern design.
