About the Item

A fabulous and rare 1920s LOUIS VUITTON Orange Vuittonite Cabin Steamer Trunk. It is made with the famous Vuittonite canvas with leather trim and handles. The orange canvas has “turned” to yellow with the effect of time and light which gives this special trunk a unique charm. Having solid brass clasps and lock, this beautiful trunk is all original and waiting to find its next home. The Louis Vuitton engraving on the exterior brass lock clasp is clearly legible, as is the lock number 044848. The interior is in excellent condition including the classic inner label which suggests the trunk vintage to be circa 1920s. Additional identifying number information is present but faded. Measurements are approx. 40” x 21” x 13” Retains original interior label and upper tray. Keys are missing. Condition: overall good. The original orange color has turned to yellow with the effect of time. Signs of wear and use as seen in the pictures consistent with age and use. Trunk is in un-restored condition but fully operational. Keys are missing. The interior is in overall very good condition for its age. Some minor staining as seen in pictures. No rips and damage to the interior lining. Retains original interior sticker. Please look at photos carefully and let us know if you have any questions or would like additional photos. Provenance: The top has a personal monogram C.B.H. Three different Railway Express shipping stickers placed on the front, bottom, and side identify an owner/shipper as Charles Hoyt from Camden, Maine. Internet research suggests the individual indicated on the shipping stickers was likely Charles Bain Hoyt, a noted collector of Chinese Art. Biographical information: Charles Bain Hoyt (DOB March 24, 1889 Kenosha, Wisc.; DOD - August 30, 1949 NY, NY) was the son of Col. James J. Hoyt, a Union Army officer of the Civil War and descendant of the theologian Jonathan Edwards who played a part in the founding of Princeton University. “Hoyt traveled extensively in many parts of the world, particularly in the Orient. He devoted himself to collecting Chinese pottery and porcelain pieces, mostly of the T'ang and Sung dynasties. The Hoyt collection, most of which is housed at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, includes Chinese and Korean ceramics, Chinese sculpture and bronzes and metal objects, paintings and prints, and other items - a very valuable reference on Chinese art and antiquities”. Thank-you for looking. More pictures available on request, please ask.
