"Nativity", Brilliant Enamel Panel in Blue, Purple and Orange by Karl Drerup

About the Item

Arguably the finest enamel artist that America has ever seen, Karl Drerup immigrated here from Germany in 1937, his anti-Nazi activism and his wife's Jewish heritage forcing them to leave Germany. In his early years in America, he worked in ceramics with Franz Joseph von Tury, but later he focused on enamel painting, prompted in part by a conversation with Tommi Parzinger, who noted that no one was creating fine enamels in New York. Drerup moved to New Hampshire in the 1940s, and there he created a stream of brilliantly-hued scenes of stylized animals and humans, often in mythological or fantastical scenes. This piece demonstrates Drerup's mastery of color and shading; the pine trees in the upper lefthand corner, for example, combine shades of teal, aquamarine, forest green, white and brown, all highly stylized and beautifully nuanced. The panel shows Drerup's usual monogram signature.
