LOUIS XVI STYLE

Reflecting the final era of royal opulence before the upheaval of the French Revolution, antique Louis XVI furniture features more angular shapes than the Rococo curves of the Louis XV style, harkening back to the imposing grandeur of Louis XIV.

Dating between 1750 and 1800, an era that overlapped with the last king of France whose reign was cut short by the guillotine, Louis XVI furniture, known as the goût grec, is emblematic of the neoclassical revision that French furniture underwent during the second half of the 18th century.

Authentic Louis XVI furniture characteristics include clean lines and carved details such as scrolls and acanthus flourishes that were inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. This was informed by a burgeoning interest in antiquity in the 18th century, owing to new archaeological excavations at sites including Pompeii and Herculaneum. It largely eclipsed the more East Asian–influenced ornamentation of Louis XV for something more geometric and symmetrical.

The Louis XVI style was defined by what was being created for the palatial rooms at Versailles and Fontainebleau, particularly for the queen, with cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener being a favorite of Marie-Antoinette’s for his luxurious pieces accented with gilded bronze and marquetry. Furniture maker Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené was also a major designer of the period, with his pieces for the royal residences adorned with giltwood and neoclassical touches like tapered columns for chair legs and laurel leaf carvings. Cabinetmaker Adam Weisweiler occasionally incorporated into his furniture porcelain panels produced by Sèvres, a popular manufacturer of European ceramics that served the crown with serveware, vases and other decorative objects.

Antique Gobelin Pillow Featuring 18th-Century Tapestry Fragment
Located in Hamburg, DE
Immerse yourself in the charm of the 18th century with this exquisite antique pillow, crafted from a fragment of a historical Gobelin tapestry. This unique piece showcases a delightful scene of a child with his dog, intricately woven and full of character. The tapestry fragment, despite having a few holes, has been lovingly hand-stitched onto an old linen pillow, preserving its beauty and historical significance. Gobelins, named after the renowned Gobelins Manufactory in Paris, were highly prized in the 18th century for their detailed and vibrant tapestry work. These tapestries were often commissioned by royalty and the elite to decorate palaces and grand homes, featuring intricate scenes from mythology, history, and everyday life. The craftsmanship involved in creating a Gobelin tapestry was exceptional, with skilled artisans spending months, sometimes years, to complete a single piece. The fragment used in this pillow is a testament to the exceptional artistry of the Gobelins weavers. It depicts a charming scene of a child with his loyal dog, rendered with remarkable detail and expression. Despite the presence of some holes, which add to its antique charm, the tapestry fragment remains a beautiful and evocative piece of art. It has been carefully hand-sewn onto an old linen pillow, enhancing its historical authenticity and ensuring its preservation. This antique Gobelin pillow...

Pair of Fortuny Textile Pillows
Located in Los Angeles, CA
These Fortuny pillows feature a stunning example of the brand’s signature hand-printed textile artistry. The design showcases a grand, classical motif that includes a floral urn overflowing with stylized blooms, framed by ornate scrollwork and architectural flourishes. This composition suggests a Renaissance or Baroque influence, often found in Fortuny’s archive patterns. The color palette is particularly rich: a terracotta or burnt sienna red pattern is printed over a muted taupe or stone-gray background, creating an earthy yet regal look. The raised design offers texture and dimension, with a soft sheen that catches the light beautifully. The pillows are finished with a contrasting neutral cord trim and rust linen backs, which frames the textile with a tailored, sophisticated edge and subtly picks up tones in the print. This pattern may be part of Fortuny’s “Dandolo...
