Antique Sèvres Style Porcelain and Gilt Bronze Vase with Marine Subject
Located in London, GB
This beautiful vase was created in France, in the period when Napoleon III was Emperor (1852-1870). It is designed in the style of Sèvres Manufactory porcelain. Sèvres goods are often beautifully hand painted with pastoral and mythological scenes, and marine subjects. These tended to be set within finely parcel gilt and jewelled frames, offset against turquoise ‘bleu celeste’ or navy 'bleu Sèvres' grounds. The porcelain vase is of classical Amphora form, with a slender elongated neck, a large ovoid body with a slightly waisted base, and a splayed foot. The vase is topped by a porcelain crown, which is navy coloured and decorated with gilding, porcelain ‘jewels’ and a gilt bronze (ormolu) pinecone finial. The navy vase...

Van Houtte's Tigridia Botanical Illustration by Louis van Houtte, 19th Century
Located in Langweer, NL
Van Houtte's Tigridia Botanical Illustration by Louis van Houtte, 19th Century This illustration features *Tigridia van Houttei*, commonly known as Van Houtte's Tigridia, a plant recognized for its unique, eye-catching flowers. Measuring approximately 24 x 16 cm (9.5 x 6.5 inches), this print is part of the esteemed botanical series "Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe," curated by Louis van Houtte, a renowned 19th-century Belgian horticulturist. Van Houtte's work is distinguished by its meticulous botanical illustrations, capturing a wide range of plant species with precision and artistry. The *Tigridia van Houttei* depicted here is native to Mexico, as indicated by the label "Mexique." The plant is characterized by its long, ribbed leaves and striking flowers, which display a mix of dark maroon, purple, and yellow. These flowers have a distinct appearance, resembling the markings of a tiger, which is fitting given the genus name *Tigridia*, derived from the Latin word for tiger. The term "châssis froid" suggests that this plant is suited for cultivation in cold frames...

Witte Corneliszoon de With Aboard Ship – 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph
Located in Langweer, NL
Witte Corneliszoon de With Aboard Ship – 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph This 19th-century hand-colored lithograph portrays Witte Corneliszoon de With, a bold and controversial Dutch admiral who served during the Eighty Years' War and the First Anglo-Dutch War. Born in 1599 in Hoogendijk, De With was known for his strict discipline, outspoken character, and bravery in numerous sea battles. He was both a rival and sometime ally of other great Dutch naval commanders such as Maarten Tromp and Michiel de Ruyter. The portrait shows De With seated confidently aboard a warship, with a cannon positioned beside him and rigging sketched in the background. He wears an ornate sash and medallion across his armor, signaling his high rank and distinguished service. A sword rests at his side, and his hat lies nearby, completing the composition of a commanding yet composed figure in the theater of naval warfare. This lithograph was drawn by Herman ten Kate and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht around 1850. The image is lithographed and finished with hand coloring, lending the print subtle texture and depth. The condition is good, with minimal aging, rich tones, and sharp details throughout. Framing suggestion: This historic naval portrait pairs well with a dark wood frame and muted archival matting in navy or grey. Use UV-protective glass to preserve the color and paper quality. Keywords: Witte de With print, Dutch admiral portrait...

Jan Evertsen – Dutch Admiral in Battle Dress, Hand-Colored Lithograph, ca.1850
Located in Langweer, NL
Jan Evertsen – Dutch Admiral in Battle Dress, 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph This 19th-century hand-colored lithograph portrays Jan Evertsen, a prominent admiral in the Dutch navy during the seventeenth century. Born in 1600 in Vlissingen, Evertsen was part of a well-known naval family and fought with distinction during the Anglo-Dutch Wars. He rose through the ranks to become lieutenant admiral of Zeeland. He was killed in action during the St James’s Day Battle in 1666, remembered as a brave and loyal defender of the Dutch Republic. The print shows Evertsen on the deck of a warship, fully clad in richly detailed armor. He holds a command baton and rests one hand confidently on his sword. A large cannon looms behind him, along with nautical equipment and the curve of the ship’s structure, grounding the portrait in a powerful naval context. His determined expression and posture reflect his leadership and courage at sea. Drawn by Herman ten Kate and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht, the lithograph features strong lines, hand-applied color, and an elegant composition that highlights the valor and historical significance of this Dutch naval hero. Details: - Subject: Jan Evertsen, Dutch admiral - Date: Circa 1850 - Technique: Hand-colored lithograph - Artist: Herman ten Kate - Printer: P W van de Weijer, Utrecht - Condition: Good and clear impression, vibrant color, minimal age-related marks - Printed title below image: Jan Evertsen Framing Suggestion: We recommend a dark wood or ebony frame with archival matting and UV-protective glass. A navy or neutral-toned mat will enhance the maritime theme and bring out the detail in the armor. Shipping: Professionally packed and shipped worldwide from our gallery in the Netherlands.
