About the Item
Antique Caucasian Sumak rug. A beautiful antique flat-weave rug from the Caucasus, woven in the intricate "sumak" brocading technique, in very pleasing colors. The three large eight-pointed star medallions of the rug are distinct and very richly detailed. Caucasian sumaks like this display a very sophisticated aesthetic, inherited from earlier weaving traditions of this prolific region. They were prestigious floor coverings, often commissioned by wealthy local patrons.
The present rug example is in very good state of preservation, showing gentle wear that only enhances its beauty. After minor repairs, the rug is structurally sturdy.
