Antique Tabriz Medallion Rug on a Soft Terracotta and Baby Blue Background

About the Item

The revival of the Persian carpet tradition took place during the last quarter of the nineteenth century, guided principally by the Tabriz merchants, who developed what was basically a cottage industry into a large scale workshop production. The finest Tabriz carpets of that period are labeled 'Hajijalili', after the name of a near mythical master weaver, and are often identified by a distinctly subtle colouration of muted tones of red, ivory and gold. In this refined example, the design is composed of a large terracotta red cartouche containing a baby blue polylobed medallion surrounded by a plethora of botanical motifs. This cartouche is layered over a baby blue field dotted with small floral elements, which in essence act as corner spandrels. The ivory ground main border imparts a tonality of brilliance to the overall composition.
