Ararat Rugs Kuba Rug with Octagons Caucasian 19th C. Revival Rug, Natural Dyed

About the Item

The source of rug comes from the book Tapis du Caucase – Rugs of the Caucasus, Ian Bennett & Aziz Bassoul, The Nicholas Sursock Museum, Beirut, Lebanon 2003, nr.79. This is a very colorful, dramatic, and unusual design rug from the late 19th century, Kuba region, Caucasus area. The series of octagons arranged in horizontal rows, each with a delicately drawn quatrefoil center, is reminiscent of a group of octagon rugs attributed to Genje in the southern Caucasus. The so-called “crab” border is also a predominantly south Caucasian design feature although the “carnation” guards are associated more with rugs from Shirvan and its northerly province of Kuba. One is reminded of kilim design, particularly the design of the so-called Talish kilims. Whichever weaving center produced this rug, it has a rare design of great charm and exceptional color. The design of the rug is interpreted by our designers, and the most appropriate colors to match the original are used for this rug. Color summary: 10 colors in total, most used 4 colors are; Imperial Red 415 (Madder Root) Dark Brown 316 (No Dye – Sheep’s Own Color) Wool Color 320 (Specially Washed) Feldgrau 340 (Spurge – Madder Root – Indigo – Walnut Husk) Group: Caucasian Rugs Family Area: Kuba region Material of Pile: Natural Dyed Hand-spun Wool Material Warp / Weft: Wool on Cotton Structure: Shirvan technique, Symmetrical knot Knots Density: 35x42 Production Place: Southeastern Anatolia – Harran Stock Location: Tokyo Size (EU): 123 X 258cm Size (US): 4'0" X 8'5" Area (EU): 3.2m² Area (US): 34.2ft².
