About the Item

77325 antique Eastern Turkestan Pictorial Khotan rug with Eclectic Northwestern style. This hand knotted wool antique Eastern Turkestan Khotan rug features a pictorial design of Chinese-style flowering vases floating upon an abrashed orange field. Located in Eastern Turkestan, the city of Khotan was an important trading post along the Silk Road that connected China in the East to Europe and the Ottoman lands in the West. Living in this crossroads of different cultures, the weavers of Khotan produced rugs that uniquely combined influences from Chinese, Tibetan, Persian, Turkish and Turkmen designs. This particular antique Khotan rug wonderfully showcases these traditions, blending styles and influences into a captivating composition. The three pictorial “still life” motifs of the field are distinctly reminiscent of Chinese iconography. Here the familiar Chinese motifs of vases, urns, bowls of fruit, and graceful floral motifs are rendered in a more abstract and geometric manner suggestive of central Asian influences. Two star flowers, a common Anatolian motif, also decorate the field alongside the pictorial motifs, with other Anatolian flourishes, such as the fertility-like symbols that adorn the vases, added in for good measure. The border features flowering shrubs and pomegranate trees that echo the designs of the field. The overall composition, as well as the color scheme, are vibrant and playful—a hallmark of Khotan rugs. The signature Khotan color palette of shocking pink and intense orange have mellowed into a blend of lovely pastels and warm, sumptuous hues. In unusually Fine condition for its age, this antique Eastern Turkestan Khotan rug would be a magnificent addition to nearly any interior. Rendered in variegated shades of burnt orange, terra cotta, coral, persimmon, brick red, paprika, rust, gold, ocher, lemon, yellow, chartreuse, lime, pink, light pink, rose, wine, burgundy, purple, maroon, light blue, baby blue, ivory, cream, umber, cocoa, and coffee. Perfect for a hall or entry, wide hallway, corridor, bedroom, living room, dining room, galley kitchen, gallery, family room, den, front room, library, office, studio, parlor, library, study or sitting room. Well-suited for a wide range of interior styles: Traditional, Eclectic, Northwestern, Asian Modern, Retro Tuscan, Industrial, Rustic, Lodge, Cabin, Contemporary, Arts & Crafts, Italian, Mediterranean, Mid-Century Modern, Nomadic, and Tribal.
