About the Item

The rugs of east Turkestan, called Khotan, Yarkand, Kashgar or more commonly Samarkand - have always represented the rarest and most coveted weavings both among interior designers and collectors. Being in perfect balance between curvilinear and geometric patterns, they show a unique iconography resulting from both the Chinese and the Indian tradition. The earlier examples are distinguished by a bold colouration while the later pieces, like the one presented here, are characterized by a refined, subdued palette. The pattern here is composed a central square Mandala element flanked by two moon shaped roundels of equal size. The indigo medium blue background represents the ideal backdrop for the golden honey hues of the rare Khotan rugs of this vintage. The full format is representative of main carpets, which were destined for the most important areas of the interior of high ranking officers and the nobility of the Tarim Basin.
