Antique Peking Rug with Beige Open Field and Brown Pictorials, from Rug & Kilim

About the Item

Hand-knotted in wool and originating from China circa 1900, this 5x7 antique Peking rug is a particularly special piece, both for its open field and for its subtle execution of pictorials. On the Design: Keen eyes for detail will admire the pictorial patterns, especially the butterfly motifs in chocolate brown around impossibly subdued geometric patterns. Admirers of the craft will further note the colors are almost Mongolian in their sensibility—borders being quite rich for a Peking among those found today at least—another of the many elements that speak to its beauty and rarity. Connoisseurs will appreciate it as an extremely collectible piece, yet also an exemplar of the elements that make Peking rugs so distinct from other Oriental and Chinese rugs today—elegant works of a reserved palette like few others seen today. This is a bold, graphic, personal antique piece; a piece of weaving history most likely from a special workshop with a deep reverence for the charm of pictorial rugs—this being one of the most elegant and versatile we’ve seen. Condition: This antique Peking rug is in great condition for its age and origin, an extremely rare and collectible piece of Peking weaving.
