About the Item

Khotan rugs are hand woven in Sinkiang province in western China, also referred to as East Turkestan. They are often called Samarkand rugs after the central Asian city where they were traded. Their patterns combine Chinese details with central Asian design schemes. The long and narrow shapes of these rugs was imposed by a practical necessity tied to daily life, as the main room in the dwellings of this region is a wide rectangular hall covered almost entirely with a raised wooden platform. This rug is presented in a standard size having an unusual Lotus flower pattern in large scale on a gold field framed by a narrow charcoal stripe border. The lotus flower represents purity, enlightenment, rebirth, and transformation. The lotus's unique growth pattern, emerging from muddy water to bloom beautifully above the surface, embodies the overcoming of adversity and the potential for spiritual awakening. 6' 7" x 4' 7".
