About the Item

Khotan rugs are hand woven in Sinkiang province in western China, also referred to as East Turkestan. They are often called Samarkand rugs after the central Asian city where they were traded. Their patterns combine Chinese details with central Asian design schemes. The long and narrow shapes of these rugs was imposed by a practical necessity tied to daily life, as the main room in the dwellings of this region is a wide rectangular hall covered almost entirely with a raised wooden platform. Carpets such as this example helped to make these platforms more comfortable. This rug has an overall pomegranate pattern on a midnight blue field within a cloud and wave border. In ancient art, the pomegranate is a symbol of both fertility and abundance. 11' 3" x 5' 6" .
