About the Item

In the 1860s an organized carpet industry was established under imperial patronage in Peking. These carpets tended to have tighter and finer weaves than their Ningxia counterparts, often having knot qualities up to 100 knots per square inch. Most antique Peking carpets employ liberal usage of undyed ivory wool and indigo-colored wool, as the indigo plant was indigenous to China. This example shows a well-balanced overall pattern of eleven circular medallions amongst vinery on an indigo field. The large, square size is not often found in Oriental rugs from this period. The central and corner medallions are oriented around a deer, which symbolizes wealth and longevity. According to legends, this animal can live a very long time and even achieve immortality. The secondary medallions each have two phoenix birds oriented in a circle. In Chinese culture, the phoenix (Fenghuang) symbolizes renewal, rebirth, immortality, and feminine power. 14' 4" x 13' 2"
