Antique Sky Blue Tsuktruk Minimalist Tibetan Rug

About the Item

Tsukdruk rugs are possibly the most representative examples of the Tibetan nomadic weaving tradition. Woven with lanolin-rich highland wool, these come in narrow strips constructed on backstrap looms, and are part of the material culture of the nomads inhabiting the high pastures of the Himalayan mountains. Patterns are typically simple, either completely open fields with beautiful colour gradations or, more rarely, embellished with designs which are representative of the Tibetan iconography. Here the four panels are decorated by various gradations of sky blue. The fascinating nuances obtained from the indigo plant create a minimalist composition of magical beauty, contributing in making tsuktruk rugs, such as this timeless example, among the most desirable weavings among all of the Tibetan rug typologies.

Antique Tibetan Monastic Tiger Rug
Located in Milan, IT
Tigers are not native animals of the Tibetan plateau; however their presence in neighbouring countries such as China and India partly explain its depiction, both in a realistic as well as in an abstract fashion, on a specific group of antique Tibetan weavings. The tiger pelt became a symbol of high rank in Tibet, employed almost exclusively on weavings which belonged to the religious as well as secular upper class. Following a series of important exhibitions and publications, rugs with this design have become exceedingly rare and sought-after. On this rare monastic example, the tiger pelt rug...
