Antique Indian Deccan Rug

About the Item

Rugs woven in the Deccan, the southern peninsula of India south of the Narmada River, exhibit colorations and motifs independent from those woven in the northern part of the country. This is often attributed to the close economic, cultural, and religious ties the region has with Persia and Turkey. It is not uncommon to see asymmetric positioning of floral elements combined with a dramatic use of open space to frame them. This unusual rug's design is inspired by Caucasian rugs woven in Baku, who are known to have central stepped medallions amongst polychrome boteh as a field pattern, and often have a "Kufic" border. The coloration of this rug, with an aqua field, sky-blue spandrels, and scarlet border differentiate this from their counterparts. In excellent overall condition, 7' 0" x 5' 2"
