About the Item
This vintage Tuareg mat comes from Mauritania, in the heart of Western Sahara, and was handmade in the 1960s by nomadic artisans. The masterful weaving of Desert Wood and strips of natural leather tells of a thousand-year-old tradition passed down among the families of the Tuareg people.
Originally used as an indoor carpet for camel-skin tents, it served to insulate against heat and sand, but it also had a strong symbolic value: it represented the status of the family and its connection to the land. The geometric decorations are stylizations of natural and cosmic elements, charged with meaning.
The warm, sandy tones, obtained from natural dyes, give this mat a timeless elegance, perfect for sophisticated wabi-sabi, minimal or organic style rooms. The item is in good vintage condition, with slight traces of time confirming its authenticity.
Selected by Afolki during an expedition to Mauritania, this mat is a rare and original piece.
