XXth Century Berber Carpet Ouarzate Red and Yellow, ca 1950

About the Item

This Berber carpet from the Ouarzadeh region has a characteristic saffron-coloured wool structure. The decoration is made with repetitive elements with geometric structure, with traditional elements of nomadic populations. By many scholars, in fact, it is noted that certain decorations are found in different regions, in which the populations have in common their relationship with the surrounding landscape. Very refined the combination of warm and bright colors of natural origin. Berber carpets have a primitive dimension. They have their own identity due to the weaving practiced by transhumant or sedentary tribes, near cities or hidden in the mountains where these traditional carpets are still knotted using ancient techniques. Geometric designs are a coded language, that of Berber women. Each rug is a unique book, which carries a message to decode. The motives are transmitted through generations. Artistic creations of the Berber woman, the carpet reflects first of all the stages of her life. Interpreting the woven marks in the carpet, you can learn that the woman who worked it is virgin, young bride or mature woman. Other times the signs reveal the pregnancy or weaning of a child. The abstract language of the Berber carpet thus takes its roots from the bodies. These simple geometric motifs, which intrigue fans, are a secret code that is whispered, which is transmitted quietly, from woman to woman, from mother to daughter. Kneeling in front of their loom, for long hours, day after day, women tell their story, weaving at the same time the plot of their destiny. The carpet becomes a manuscript, an open book and a diary of a lifetime. Once stored, he goes to an unknown destiny and becomes a carpet of the house, a blanket, a tapestry... guarding the world his mystery
