XXth Century Kilim Geomtric Anatolian Rug Red and Yellow, ca 1950

About the Item

The term kilim originates from Persian gelim which means to stretch. Similar words are used in other languages as in Turkish kilim. It’s an artifact common to many people from the Middle East to South America, everywhere there is a culture linked to sheep farming and the land. The feature that makes them uniform is the flat weft made on a frame, crossing, with different techniques, the weft thread with that of warp. Until a few years ago the Kilim were considered second-rate carpets, my father told me how old kilim were used to wrap other carpets for shipping. More recently it was understood how these typical artefacts of nomadic populations, precisely because they were not the object of exchange in the great international markets of the carpet, had preserved their original characteristics. The kilim we present comes from Central Anatolia and has the classic decoration with toothed polygons. Its main feature is in the colors so bright and unusual in the combinations. There are import dyes that probably the knots bought directly in bazaars to make their carpet more and more special.
