Antique Persian Malayer Vagireh Sampler Rug, circa 1920

About the Item

Highly collectible Persian Malayer sampler rug, this cute piece is testimonial to the process of how large carpets were ordered to the workshop owners in Iran in late 19th century. A sampler or Vagireh provides a means by which designs may be passed from one weaver to the next or from one generation to another, which functions like a cartoon or graph,is a small pattern rug with enough design that a full-sized example can be woven from it;portions of each major and minor border stripe are shown as well as the field pattern. This beautiful sampler was made to display patterns as well as to illustrate to prospective purchasers the general color scheme and the texture of the carpet. Samplers like this are recognizable by the obviously incomplete and asymmetrical field pattern. All dyes used to make this samper are organic, all sides and ends are original and pile is evenly low and the overall condition of it is very good.
