Late 19th Century Antique Floral Hand-woven Wool Bidjar Rug

About the Item

This Bidjar rug has a shaded indigo-blue field with an overall design of bold light blue scrolling vines forming a lattice enclosing polychrome palmettes and flowering stems surrounding a central column of bold dusty-pink and ivory palmettes surrounded by a dense profusion of flowering stems together with sandy-yellow and dusty-pink bands of bold stylized flowerheads, in an ivory border of polychrome palmettes linked by delicate scrolling and floral vine between terracotta-red floral vine stripes. About Bidjar Rugs: Bidjar rugs, sometimes called the "Iron Rugs of Persia," are famous for their incredible durability and dense weaving, making them some of the most resilient Persian rugs. Originating from the town of Bidjar in western Iran, these rugs are known for their compact pile and heavy construction, achieved through a unique weaving technique where the weft threads are tightly packed down with special comb-like tools, often making them thicker and heavier than other Persian rugs. The designs on Bidjar rugs are typically traditional and intricate, featuring motifs like the Herati (a repeating fish or diamond pattern), floral patterns, and central medallions. These rugs usually come in rich, deep colors—reds, blues, and earth tones being the most popular—that age beautifully over time. A unique quality of Bidjar rugs is that they are woven on both wool and cotton foundations, which further adds to their strength and long-lasting appeal. Because of their construction and quality, Bidjar rugs are highly valued by collectors and decorators who seek pieces that combine artistry with exceptional resilience.
