Tribal Mid-20th Century Handmade Persian Turkoman Runner
Located in New York, NY
A vintage Persian tribal Turkoman rug in runner format handmade during the mid-20th century. Although this rug is of Persian origin, the roots of Turkoman rugs originated in the Central Asian region. Measures: 1' 6" x 10' 4" Central Asian Rugs & Carpets: Central Asia is a vast area stretching from Northeastern Persia to western China, and from northern Afghanistan to the southern edge of Russia. The carpets can be usefully divided into three groups: the nomadic Turkmen rugs of Turkmenistan, northern Afghanistan, and northeastern Persia; the non-Turkmen tribal pieces from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kirghizstan; and the urban creations of Khotan, Yarkand, and Kashgar, oasis cities of Western China (Xinjiang Province). Commercially, the most important group is from Khotan, the easternmost of the Chinese Turkestan cities. The craft of rug weaving is primarily in the hands of Muslim Uighurs. Khotan carpets mix purely Central Asian design themes with Chinese elements. Native Khotan devices include pomegranate trees, upright flowers, round medallions, and yellow or red grounds. Chinese motives include triangular fretwork corners, swastika fretwork, and Yun-Tsao Tou (clouds and rain) diagonally striped polychrome borders. Cotton foundations, asymmetrical (Persian) knots, and medium weaves are standard. Some vintage Khotan are in horizontal, pictorial layouts with multiple various vases and plants. Saphs (multiple prayer niche panel carpets) are also a Khotan specialty. Others employ stepped and layered lozenge medallions, singly or in pairs. Still others, almost all antique, feature a stylized version of the allover Persian Herati design. Many of the oldest pieces employ brown wool wefts. Antique and vintage Khotans are almost always in the k’ang (double square) layout, conforming to the local household plans. Only relatively recently has the 6’ by 12’ or 7’ by 16’ format been replaced by the 9’ by 12’ size. As a result, an antique room size Khotan carpet is very uncommon. Reds are cinnamon, tomato and rust, never wine reds, crimson, or scarlet. Yarkand, farther west on the old Silk Road specializes in multi-medallion long carpets while Kashgar, farthest west and most under Persian influence, has traditionally knotted allover pattern pieces with finer weaves, often with silk piles, and enriched with medal thread, on cotton foundations. Extant Kashgars go back to the 17th century, but the carpet craft in Chinese Turkestan must be much older as fragments have been recovered from local tombs of the early C.E. period. Kashgars are the rarest of all East Turkestan rugs. Most available vintage East Turkestan carpets are interwar Khotans, many with pleasingly soft decorative palettes. The non-Turkmen nomads include the Kazakh, Kirghiz, Uzbek, and Karakalpak groups. Like the Turkmen, they were once all seasonally migratory, dwelling in round felt tents (yurts), but have been settled, at least partially, in the villages, and have taken up crafts and agriculture instead of sheep herding. As a result, carpet production has transitioned from domestic tent use to commercial sale, but the roots of long traditions are still evident. The Uzbeks weave...

Vintage Persian Khorassan Floral Pattern Room Size Rug in Navy, Turquoise, Red
Located in Barrington, IL
A masterful work of textile art, this vintage Persian Khorassan rug dates to the second quarter of the 20th century and features an intricate floral scrollwork design that exemplifies the elegance of classic Persian weaving. Hand-knotted in the historic Khorassan region of northeastern Iran—renowned for producing some of the finest rugs in Persian history—this piece showcases a rare and desirable near-square room size, making it particularly versatile for both traditional and contemporary interiors. The deep navy blue field serves as a dramatic backdrop for an elaborate network of scrolling vines that unfurl across the surface like flowering branches. These scrolling forms are richly adorned with vibrant floral motifs in turquoise, red, yellow, green, ivory, and sky blue, lending a cheerful and luminous quality to the overall composition. The border design, featuring large, stylized flower bouquets, beautifully frames the central pattern and enhances the visual balance of the piece. Woven from high-quality wool and dyed with natural pigments, this Khorassan rug offers not only beauty but durability—ideal for a formal living space, grand entryway, or as a collector’s display piece. Its vivid color palette, refined workmanship, and harmonious proportions embody the timeless elegance of Persian rug artistry. A stunning addition for collectors, connoisseurs, and interior designers seeking a one-of-a-kind rug with historic provenance, artistic sophistication, and decorative impact. 1950's Persian Tabriz Hunting Carpet with Modern Style
Located in Dallas, TX
77353 Vintage Persian Tabriz Rug, 11'00 x 15'03. In this resplendent hand-knotted wool vintage Persian Tabriz hunting rug, a mythic narrative unfolds across a regal composition of color, craftsmanship, and cultural symbolism. At the heart lies a scalloped medallion blooming with florals—lotus blossoms signifying rebirth, lilies whispering of purity, and rosettes circling like celestial constellations around a dark indigo center. This elaborate medallion anchors the visual rhythm of the piece, drawing the viewer into a timeless world where artistry and storytelling become one. Surrounding the medallion is a magnificent rust-hued field alive with aristocratic riders astride galloping steeds, poised mid-hunt amid a garden of earthly delights. With arrows drawn and regal posture, these noble figures evoke a sense of valor and refinement from Persian courtly traditions. Deer leap and bound through the landscape, symbols of grace, gentleness, and fleeting beauty, while paradise birds perch delicately within the flora—emissaries of heaven and harbingers of spiritual bliss. Each animal is rendered with care, not as decoration alone, but as a living thread in the fabric of a storied garden. Interwoven throughout the field is a verdant array of botanical motifs, each carrying its own symbolic weight. Hyacinths suggest regeneration, tulips prosperity, and peonies an echo of strength and power. Pomegranates, split open and brimming with seeds, embody fertility and life’s abundance, while delicate blossoms and curling vines meander like arabesque poetry across the terrain. Saz leaves and acanthus scrolls provide the baroque flourish of classical Persian garden design, transforming the field into a cultivated wilderness of movement and meaning. The corner spandrels mirror the central field, with muted mint backdrops densely packed with flowering stems and gracefully leaping deer, extending the sense of harmony and echoing the symmetry prized in Persian aesthetics. These spaces act as serene interludes between the fervent energy of the hunt and the stately stillness of the border, softening the composition while enriching its narrative depth. Encircling the entire scene is a radiant floral border set against a pale yellow backdrop, anchored wit eight-pointed rosette stars alternating with ornate palmettes and peony that serve as both spiritual and ornamental punctuation. Blooming tulips and stylized saz foliage arc and weave between arabesque scrolls, culminating in a final embrace of the inner tableau. This Tabriz hunting carpet...
