About the Item

This exquisite "Lathyrus" flatweave rug by renowned Swedish textile artist Judith Johansson, measures 200 x 140 cm and is signed with her distinctive green woven monogram "JJ" in the lower left corner. Named after the Latin word for Sweet Pea, "Lathyrus" features a stylized floral design with pink and red sweet pea blooms on delicate green stalks, evoking the fragrance and charm of a summer garden. The rug’s background is a soft blend of white and light green melange, creating a bright, airy impression that enhances the floral motif. Designed in 1976, this Scandinavian modern Rölakan rug embodies Johansson's skillful craftsmanship and unique design aesthetic. A small original leather strap attached to the rug’s fringe bears its name, "Lathyrus." Included is an original watercolor sketch by Johansson for this design, available on the Swedish Digitalt Museum website and shown in the last photos. ABOUT JUDITH JOHANSSON udith Bengtsson from Trollhättan and John Johansson from Norra Össjö are the epitome of "love at first sight." In 1935, John, visiting Trollhättan to sell handicrafts, met Judith, a talented 19-year-old weaver. They were engaged two weeks later, married in 1937, and became inseparable partners in life and work. Judith, trained by her mother and grandmother, opened a weaving studio in Knäred, supported by John, who had inherited his family’s business acumen. In Knäred, they established one of Sweden's most respected weaving studios. Judith's handwoven rugs and tapestries, especially her unique Röllakan designs, gained wide acclaim, with clients including churches, public institutions, and retailers across Sweden and beyond. Demand grew rapidly, and the studio expanded in 1951 and 1965, employing up to 13 weavers. Throughout her career, Judith produced over 400 designs, with each piece handcrafted and unique. Her work, often displayed in exhibitions from 1956 onward, earned her numerous awards, including the Hallands County Cultural Prize and the Royal Patriotic Society’s gold medal. Judith’s artistry continued through her daughter Britt-Marie until 2003, maintaining a legacy of Swedish textile excellence.
