About the Item

52056 Vintage Turkish Oushak Rug Runner, 03'02 x 11'05. Like a path traced in earth and time, this hand-knotted wool vintage Turkish Oushak rug runner unrolls with the quiet dignity of age and artistry. Washed in a gentle antique finish, its earth-tone colors speak in hushed tones of brown, gray, taupe, and faded rust—hues weathered like stone steps worn smooth beneath generations of passing feet. It is a textile echo, carrying with it the breath of Anatolia and the silence of forgotten corridors. Each hexagon medallion rests within the long field like a sacred marker, joined by intricate cross-shaped latch hooks and latticework arms that ripple outward like the geometry of ancient dreams. The medallions themselves, rich with small Anatolian gul motifs and checkered symbols, unfold like shields of knowledge—offering protection, history, and a sense of symmetry in a world forever shifting. Between these focal points, eight-point stars, fetter motifs, burdock symbols, S-hooks, and glyph-like motifs drift across the surface, hinting at a secret script known only to the loom and the land. The tribal border, a rhythmic sequence of hooks and stepped cross motifs, provides a grounded enclosure—a frame of ancestral memory that tempers the dynamic energy within. An inner crenelated fence guard band, representing protection, runs parallel to the core, guiding the eye with intention and care. The softened contrast between the frame and field creates a sense of breath and balance, a dance between form and fluidity, order and organic unfolding. Woven with purpose and preserved with grace, this Oushak runner is more than a utilitarian object—it is a living narrative. Whether placed in a contemporary gallery hall or winding through a historic home, it carries the enduring soul of Turkish craftsmanship. Its every thread hums with the wisdom of old hands and the whisper of time, inviting those who walk its path to tread softly, and listen. Abrash. Antique Wash. Hand-knotted wool. Made in Turkey. Measures: 03'02 x 11'05. Date: 1950's. Mid-20th Century.

Mid-20th Century Handmade Turkish Oushak Runner
Located in New York, NY
A vintage Turkish Oushak rug in runner format handmade during the mid-20th century. Measures: 3' 1" x 11' 7" Until the Great Persian Carpet Revival in the later 19th century, the “Oriental rug” was Turkish. For nearly six centuries, Turkish rugs, both scatter, room size, and even larger, thoroughly dominated the European import market. Whereas the Persian carpet can be divided into urban, village, and tribal types, in Turkey and its predecessor the Ottoman Empire, rugs almost exclusively came from village weavers and from a small number of urban workshops. Ninety percent village, nine percent city, one percent tribal. Turkish weavers have, with very few exceptions, always worked with the symmetric (Turkish) knot. Wool foundations are standard practice among both town and village weavers. The exceptions, very finely woven 20th century and recent Herekeh silks from near Istanbul, and early 17th century Ottoman Court rugs from Bursa, constitute only a tiny part of the total. Always pricey, they appealed and still appeal to the clients who want lots of knots and perfect execution instead of individual personality. The urban workshops have been centered around the western Turkish city of Oushak and its attendant port town of Smyrna. Oushak weaves with the trends in fashion. When color saturated medallion carpets were needed, Oushak was ready in the 17th and 18th centuries. When coarse red and blue carpets...
