About the Item

Lotus flowers are the main protagonists of this Chinese carpet, which reworks a traditional element of Chinese iconography in a modern key. In China, the lotus flower is more than a natural beauty to be observed, for it hides a profound spiritual meaning. For the Chinese, it is a symbol of purity and profound spirituality. It seems a paradox when you think that the flower blooms from slime and mud. It remains under the surface of marshy water and then grows, rising beyond the surface, only opening its petals once there is no longer the danger to get them dirty. Because of it being a beautiful and delicate flower growing from mud and slime, it takes a profound significance within Asian cultures: it represents the energetic centres of the human body. It is a symbol of purity because its petals are completely impermeable to the underlying dirt.

20th Century, Brown and Floreal Motifs Savonerie French Rug, ca 1920
Located in Firenze, IT
The term Savonerie identifies a series of carpets knotted with Turkish knot and adorned with floral designs, made in Europe in various manufactories. The most famous and the one that gives the name to these carpets was settled in Paris in an ancient soap factory. Its foundation was an attempt by France in the seventeenth century to reproduce the expensive oriental carpets, but the main feature of these carpets is the Western style decor, which introduced an absolute novelty in the furnishings of the time. The productions of Savonerie over the years have become multiple, the most popular in addition to the French are the Spanish and Austrian. They were manufactories created specifically to produce large carpets intended for sumptuous noble palaces. Since the end of the 19th century many manufactories have also begun to produce carpets of different sizes, always with a decoration dictated by a Western style furniture...
