About the Item

Anatolian Kirsehir prayer rug with a village design Turkish, 20th Century Height 155cm, width 96cm This eye-catching pictorial prayer rug was skilfully woven from wool by Turkish carpet weavers in the 20th century. Its design is typical of rugs crafted in the Turkish city of Kirsehir indicating the place of its creation. The central mihrab (prayer niche) is adorned with rows of colourful houses and trees. This is framed by two pastel-coloured carnation patterns, a typical motif on rugs from this area. Other borders include a very geometric blue, red, and cream design extending around the central mihrab with an opening toward the bottom. The other edges are filled with further, nature-inspired floral designs. Most of the compositions are placed on a deep red background which beautifully complements the lighter shades. Cream-coloured tassels feature on the shorter ends of the rug. Celebrating the work of Anatolian carpet weavers, this prayer rug would be a great addition to one’s collection.

Large Romanian Knotted Carpet, Attributed to Tuduc
By Theodor Tuduc 1
Located in London, GB
This beautiful, vibrant carpet has been attributed to the important Romanian carpet-maker, Theodor Tuduc (1888-1893). Tuduc ran a prestigious workshop in the 19th century which specialised in the restoration and replication of antique rugs. This item, for instance, is one of a small group of carpets which were knotted after early Caucasian ‘dragon’ rugs. Tuduc's copies of antique rugs were so beautiful and accurate that they have become almost as collectable as the originals. The carpet field is knotted with beautiful stylised depictions of animals, birds and dragons, as well as fruit trees, flowers, and foliage. These designs have been rendered in red, orange, light blue, turquoise, navy, green, mustard yellow, and off-white. This field is set within a border, knotted with similarly colored foliate motifs against an off-white background. Literature: For early Caucasian dragon carpets...

Antique Iranian Kalamkari Prayer Mat
Located in London, GB
Antique Iranian Kalamkari prayer mat Persian, Late 19th Century Height 128cm, width 92cm Crafted in the late 19th century by skilled Iranian craftsmen, this cotton prayer mat features a plethora of religious and nature-inspired motifs. Its surface is adorned with a selection of patterns and motifs created using the traditional woodblock printing technique called kalamkari (or Qalamkari). The 400 years old technique originating from Isfahan, utilises only natural and local materials, celebrating and supporting the local communities. A selection of repetitive, organic motifs adorns the cotton textile. The patterns are coloured in various shades of red, cream, and blue, their design inspired by religious Islamic architecture, in particular that of a mosque. The central prayer niche (also called a mihrab) is identical in shape to that of the arch-shaped prayer niches found in mosques. Arabic markings feature above it. This Persian prayer mat...
