About the Item

Antique Anatolian Konya Runner, 19th Century (3rd Quarter) Using a classic Anatolian design format, a column of five alternating sea-green and red quatrefoil medallions, interspersed with corner pieces, are drawn against a madder red ground, forming several distinct repeating patterns. Rams-Horn ornament outlines each, harmonizing the drawing of the field. A geometricized floral border running against an ochre ground frames the composition. At the same time, a row of colorful pendants at both top and bottom, reminiscent of those of classical Ottoman textiles, provides for further balance and flare. Three large and boldly articulated medallions in the style of early Kazak weavings from the Caucasus dominate the vibrant madder-red field of this historically important and masterfully executed example from eastern Anatolia. The treatment of this iconic central medallion as repeat ornament is innovative and highly successful. While exceedingly true to the spirit of drawing and its execution, the distinctive construction of this piece reveals it as the work of a particularity skillful Anatolian weaver. This piece was published in "Oriental Rugs from Pacific Collections" in conjunction with the International Conference on Oriental Rugs (ICOC) in 1990. Antiques and art courtesy of Foster Gwin...
