About the Item

The design on this antique Western Anatolian Bergama first appeared on a group of early Turkish rugs from the Ottoman period called 'Large Pattern Holbein', and is characterised by an eight-spoke wheel element revolving around a small octagon and inscribed inside a larger octagonal medallion. This motif appears also on a group of 15th century Spanish rugs and is considered one of the earliest patterns conceived by the master designers working in the court ateliers of the Ottoman empire. The two medallion scheme is also reminiscent of the earliest Anatolian design formats, appearing on iconic examples such as the Dragon & Phoenix rug conserved in Museum of Islamic Art in Berlin as well as the Marby rug, which part of the Swedish state collections in the museum of Stockholm. It is interesting to see how a pattern has survived virtually untouched for over four centuries, and is indicative of how it profoundly represents the textile art tradition of Western Anatolia.
