About the Item

This 10x16 antique Turkish rug of Sivas provenance is a rich and exciting new curation from Rug & Kilim’s collection of important classics—a particularly unique find among works of a celebrated weaving tradition, made with hand-knotted wool. On the Design: This exceptional Turkish Sivas rug showcases a sophisticated allover design with a meticulously executed pattern of stylized vase or boteh motifs arranged in precise horizontal registers against a sumptuous black field. Each boteh element stands in elegant relief, rendered in a palette of blue, green, red and pink that creates striking contrast against the deep field. Particularly notable is the rhythmic spacing of these primary motifs, which are surrounded by an intricate network of small-scale floral elements and vine work. This creates a mesmerizing visual field where the larger motifs appear to float above the dense secondary patterning—a hallmark of master Sivas workshops. The primary border features a continuous floral vine pattern against a lighter ground, while the secondary borders incorporate more geometric elements that frames the design. The outermost beige-ivory border presents a delicate all-over floral pattern that provides perfect contrast to the deep black field. The perfect balance between formal design elements and botanical detail reflects the sophisticated design sensibility that made these carpets prized possessions in aristocratic interiors throughout Europe and the Ottoman Empire. Condition: This antique Turkish Sivas rug further enjoys good condition for its age and origin.
