About the Item

A highly unusual Kayseri silk rug, distinguished by the so-called vaq-vaq pattern on a crimson red background, exquisitely rendered in the original Mughal style. The name of this pattern is derived from that of a fantastic tree, whose fruits were realistic human and animal figures having the power of speech. Silk rugs such as the present example were created in the Armenian workshops in Kayseri by the most skillful master weavers, and are considered among the finest Turkish carpets of the late nineteenth century.
