About the Item

Antique Anatolian niche design rugs, also known as prayer rugs, have been extremely popular in the west since the late 19th century. These are defined by a directional pattern composed of a central niche element, this typically containing architectural motifs such as columns as well as a lamp motif which hangs from the summit of the niche. This scheme varies according to its area of origin, as each Turkish village having its own adaptation of the niche motif as well as border elements, together with a distinguished palette. This fine example borrows its pattern from prayer rugs of the early Ottoman period, and is characterised by a curvilinear niche design which has the form of a horseshoe, as well as by narrow borders. This is the signature style of the prayer rugs originating from Ghiordes, in western Anatolia, which date to a period between 1700 to 1850. Towards the end of the nineteenth century the huge demand for this type of rug, which is typically very finely knotted with a velvet-like texture and handle, gave rise to weavings originating from the area of Bandirma, in eastern Turkey, crafted by expert Armenian weavers. Here the background is embellished by a pair of columns with flaming palmettes at its ends, together with a hanging lamp. The subtle palette consists of olive green in harmonic contrast with burgundy and with touches of light blue.
