About the Item

This unique Wool Hereke Carpet is among the highest-quality carpets in the Hereke workshop. There is a flower lattice on a beige background and light khaki green with the fineness of the weave, the use of color, and the elegant and sophisticated design. It is a piece that you can feel the unique style of Hereke. The woven fabric is thick, so it stays in place and is sturdy. It is a beautiful and practical carpet that does not show dirt easily. Hereke rugs are a type of luxurious handmade carpets that are renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship and intricate designs. They take their name from the small town of Hereke, located in the northwestern part of Turkey, which has been a prominent center for rug weaving since the mid-19th century. Hereke rugs have a long and distinguished history. They were initially produced exclusively for Ottoman palaces and were favored by the Sultans due to their superior quality and exquisite beauty. The art of Hereke rug weaving was closely guarded and passed down through generations of master weavers. What sets Hereke Rugs apart is their exceptional craftsmanship and the use of high-quality materials. They are typically made with the finest silk or wool, and sometimes a combination of both, resulting in rugs of exceptional softness and durability. The intricate designs on Hereke rugs often feature elaborate floral patterns, central medallions, and intricate borders, all meticulously hand-knotted with great attention to detail. Hereke rugs are known for their rich color palettes, which often include vibrant hues and exquisite shading. Traditional Hereke rugs typically feature a large central medallion surrounded by smaller motifs, creating a harmonious and balanced design. The knot density of Hereke rugs is usually very high, contributing to their luxurious feel and intricate patterns. Due to their exceptional quality and craftsmanship, Hereke rugs are considered highly collectible and are sought after by rug enthusiasts and collectors worldwide. They are often used as decorative pieces in luxurious interiors and can be found in museums and private collections. It's worth noting that the term "Hereke" has sometimes been used more broadly to describe rugs woven in other parts of Turkey or even outside of Turkey but imitating the style and techniques of the original Hereke rugs. Therefore, when purchasing a Hereke rug, it is essential to ensure its authenticity and verify its origin. Ararat Rugs Chelaberd Karabakh Rug Antique Caucasian Revival Carpet Natural Dyed
By Ararat Rugs
Located in Tokyo, JP
The design source of the rug comes from the book Tapis du Caucase – Rugs of the Caucasus, Ian Bennett & Aziz Bassoul, The Nicholas Sursock Museum, Beirut, Lebanon 2003, nr.29 and Oriental Rugs Volume 1 Caucasian, Ian Bennett, Oriental Textile Press, Aberdeen 1993, nr.93 and Caucasian Carpets, E. Gans-Reudin, Thames and Hudson, Switzerland 1986, pg.144. This is a large medallion rug from the late 19th century, Karabakh, Chelaberd (a village slightly to the southeast of Chondzoresk) region, Caucasus area. At Chelaberd, carpets were manufactured according to strict regulations; and, as a result, dimensions, motifs, and borders are approximately the same throughout. This example bears large medallions on its red ground; the colored features stand out well against the white ground. There has been all manner of suggestions as to the identity of this cruciform motif spiked with long-stemmed flowers: according to various traditions, it has been taken for a bird in flight, a sun flashing its beams of light, crossed swords, or even the coat of arms of a family or town. As a result, this type of carpet is habitually called an ‘Eagle Kazak (Adler in German)’, ‘Sun or Sunburst Kazak...
