Late 19th Century Turkish Oushak Area Rug in Mamluk Pattern in Saffron, Teal

About the Item

A Turkish Oushak area rug from the 3rd quarter of the 1800s. The rug has the classic design of the Mamluk rugs from the 15th and 16th centuries. The rug has a beautiful saffron yellow field. It has a small central medallion in blue/green and cream colors. The main border is in blue color. The rug has a very rich and shiny wool and because of this it is very difficult to capture its wonderful color and designs on photos. Truly a beautiful small rug over 120 years old. Mamluk carpets are characterized by a central, dominant octagonal medallion surrounded by a great variety of smaller, geometric motifs. They take their name from the Mamluk dynasties that ruled Egypt from 1250 through 1517. Carpets of this design were produced in Cairo, largely for the southern European luxury trade. Production of surviving Mamluk carpets started from the second half of the fifteenth century until the middle of the sixteenth century, and continued even after the Ottoman conquest of Egypt in 1517.
