Late 19th Century Turkish Oushak Rug
About the Item
Oushak carpets are named after the large town in western Anatolia (Turkey) where they were woven. This town has been a major weaving center for rug production since the reign of the Ottoman Empire (July, 1299 – October, 1923) up to the current day. This Empire is widely considered to have been the most powerful in the world under the rule of Suleiman the Magnificent during the 16th and 17th centuries. Magnificent court carpets from this period can be found in the world's most prominent museum collections. The end of the 19th century ushered in a rejuvenation in this local industry, as European demand for pile carpets increased. Common characteristics of these Oushaks were larger-scale stylized floral patterns in soft, subtle hues woven with silky luxurious wool. These attributes make this type of carpet highly decorative in today's interiors. 5' 9" x 3' 8"
