About the Item

This is an old Western Anatolian Kilim from the Fethiye region with a red background and beautiful color composition. The borders, medallions, and fields are densely woven with patterns. There are few rough edges, and it is a polite job. Red is the main color, but there are variations in shades, from colors close to vermillion to colors close to dark red. In addition, the colors that are combined are all calm and gentle and complement the red colors. Subdued pink, pale moss green, deep gray, and natural beige. These warm colors support each other and create a single world. In particular, the fine color weaving in the white ground weaving field is not particularly noticeable, but I feel that it is a beautiful part that makes you feel the weaver's thoughtfulness in every corner. It will surely make every place a space full of warmth. Located on the Mediterranean Sea, in the bay of Fethiye with the western Taurus Mountains behind, Fethiye is built on the ancient Lycian site of Telmessus. The tombs and sarcophagi there date back to the fifth and fourth centuries BC and there is also a Byzantine fortress that stands ruined on a hill nearby. An earthquake in 1958 destroyed most of the old buildings in Fethiye, and yet it is now a popular tourist location, particularly as the picturesque town of Uludeniz lies close by. From Fethiye comes an unusual composition that features an 'empty' center with busily decorated skirts. This center is usually woven in plain weave with red or pink colors, and occasionally a small floating central medallion is included. These kilims either have no borders or have a framing vertical line of contrasting colors, such as blue. It is possible that this format was used as a cover for coffins, like the saf compositions. Another popular composition is that of interconnecting hooked medallions covering the whole field, with narrow borders and skirts. Some çiçims are woven here that are generally a mixture of the plain weave in narrow bands of color and stripes of çiçim weave. Another design, often found in the supplementary weft-wrapping technique, is that of a star motif arranged in straight or diagonal rows over the main field of the kilim. Colors include blues, reds, browns, greens, oranges, and purple. The old kilims are woven in reds, pinks, blues, yellow, browns, and a little green. Most are made in slitweave, but some çiçim and zili technique is also used. The more recent examples tend to be woven with rather coarse wool, although they are on the whole well made. Kilims that are large and rectangular are most common, although small sizes also occur.

Antique Malatya Kilim Rug Old South Eastern Anatolian Turkish Carpet
Located in Tokyo, JP
This is a South Eastern Anatolian antique Kilim from the Malatya region with a rare and beautiful color composition. Malatya is Turkey's main kilim production area, and there are many variations. This is one of them, a runner-type kilim. The thread is thin, and the weave is very fine and dense. Some metallic threads are used in this antique kilim, which is rarely seen in Anatolian kilims. Red, navy blue, and gray are the colors that determine the impression of this kilim. Other colors, such as brown, yellow, and light blue, are also used in the patterns. The wavy horizontal striped pattern, plain pattern, and lined motif pattern are woven together to create a kilim that looks like an obi. The pattern of the motif and the pattern of the wave are about the same amounts, giving a lively impression without getting busy. The deep shades of colors and patterns that are familiar to each other are unique to antiques. However, it still retains good coloring, which makes it hard to believe that it is an antique. The runner type is a good type to make this kilim unique. Also, for those who want to create a different kind of home, the use of runners is very effective. Malatya is a town built on one main street that continues for several miles. It is situated in the Tohmasuyu River basin, which is encircled by the high peaks of the eastern Taurus Mountains. This is a fertile agricultural region, particularly for apricots, and has been a prolific weaving area for many years. The modern town was established in 1838; old Malatya, which is close by, was once an important city in Armenia Minor. In Roman times it was important as a garrison town on the eastern frontier, and the settlement came under Ottoman rule in the early fifteenth century. Considering the number of kilims woven in this region there is a surprising lack of diversity in design, especially in the larger kilims; this is possibly a direct result of the Kurdish tribal tradition of weaving only one type of design. Small prayer rugs...
