About the Item

This is a Western Anatolian vintage Kilim from the Esme ( Eshme ) region with a rare and beautiful color composition. This type of large Esme Kilims often features hexagonal medallions, either arranged in pairs or woven singly as central motifs, with smaller infill designs decorating the rest of the field and borders. These kilims have gained great favor in the Western markets as they are woven in one piece, are not too long and narrow, and fade to soft colors. Sadly, many have ended up being made into sofas, cushions, and other soft furnishings that happened to be in vogue at the time, but this is an inevitable consequence of the versatility of kilims. Small Esme kilims are woven in a variety of designs, and copies of old Aydin and Kula prayer-arch compositions with tree-of-life motifs are often found. The coloring of Esme kilims is similar to that of Denizli, but a little softer: red and pink, purple and blue that fade to grey, as well as black, orange, and some yellow. Both areas use slitweave, with medium- to fine-spun wool, and cotton is often used for the warps. Esme kilims have more detailed designs and a finer quality of weaving.
