About the Item

Royal Hereke carpet, silk on silk around 1980 Floral Hereke made of pure silk, light red with a border and medallion Highly valuable silk carpets come from the Turkish city of Hereke. This tradition was promoted by the art-loving Sultan Abd-ul-Medjid (reigned 1839–1861). In 1844, he had the court weaving workshops relocated from Cairo to Hereke. Hand-knotted Hereke silk carpets are among the finest carpets in the world and are knotted with a density of up to 6 million knots per square meter. Thanks to the knotting technique, the pattern is just as clearly visible on the back as on the front. Antique Turkish carpets fetch top prices at renowned art auction houses. Typical motifs of Hereke carpets include flowers, branches and leaves, as well as birds, the tree of life, and the so-called mehrab or mihrab pattern, a prayer niche depicted together with oil lamps. In addition to traditional motifs and typical Ottoman or Turkish patterns, Hereke silk carpets are also woven today with more modern designs adapted to contemporary tastes. Typical colors for Hereke silk carpets include deep dark blue, bright red, vibrant green, bright yellow, and various natural tones in all shades. The ornate border provides a striking contrast to the center and forms the transition at the edge of the carpet. The lush floral motifs of this Hereke are elegantly and diversely designed. The graceful vegetative symbols depicting blossoms, leaves, and branches are artfully intertwined. At the center of the central field of this Hereke lies the symmetrical centerpiece, also called a medallion. The design of the field is subordinate to the medallion, creating the impression that the medallion is floating in the field.
