20th Century Violet and Grey Art Deco European Rug, circa 1920

About the Item

The history of the European carpet reflects the different cultures of the old continent: from the court tradition, in England and France, to that of village, typical of the Portuguese production, from the importation of Turkish and Egyptian motifs in Spain brought from the Moors up to the continuous and dialectic relationship with the various artistic currents - from Rococo to neoclassicism, from Naturalism to contemporary abstractionism. The carpet that we propose is positioned in the stylistic and cultural movement of the beginning of the 20th century defined as Art Deco 'With this style the traditional canons are interrupted by renewing both the decorations and the colors. Our example of North European production, proposes the element of the garland in a modern composition that ventures in colors with decidedly original combinations.

20th Century, Brown and Floreal Motifs Savonerie French Rug, ca 1920
Located in Firenze, IT
The term Savonerie identifies a series of carpets knotted with Turkish knot and adorned with floral designs, made in Europe in various manufactories. The most famous and the one that gives the name to these carpets was settled in Paris in an ancient soap factory. Its foundation was an attempt by France in the seventeenth century to reproduce the expensive oriental carpets, but the main feature of these carpets is the Western style decor, which introduced an absolute novelty in the furnishings of the time. The productions of Savonerie over the years have become multiple, the most popular in addition to the French are the Spanish and Austrian. They were manufactories created specifically to produce large carpets intended for sumptuous noble palaces. Since the end of the 19th century many manufactories have also begun to produce carpets of different sizes, always with a decoration dictated by a Western style furniture...
