About the Item

Handwoven in a wool flatweave and originating from Ukraine circa 1900, this 14x19 antique Bessarbian kilim with floral patterns is one of the most special and exciting new pieces to enter Rug & Kilim’s European rug collection. On the Design This grand work features lattice design of alternating powder blue and ivory roundels each with a floral spray, within polychrome floral borders inspired by European Neoclassical aesthetic. This rug is one of the most remarkable of this provenance, both for its style and its outstanding size, with a particular air of influence from the French Aubusson and Savonnerie sensibilities that further speak to its royal beauty, much like the aristocratic commissions of old. Altogether it’s an elegant piece as deeply personal in its subtext as it is in the fine execution and unexpected beauties that distinguish it in our craft—both a masterpiece and a true collector’s rug, teeming with history and culture. Condition: This antique Bessarabian rug further enjoys good condition for its age and lineage, with exceptionally minimal wear consistent with its age.

Outstanding Floral Bessarabian Kilim with Light Green Border, 19th Century
Located in San Francisco, CA
Outstanding Floral Bessarabian Kilim with Light Green Border, Mid-19th Century Pile carpets and flat-weaves known in the market as 'Bessarabian' were woven mostly in the 19th century in what are now the countries of Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine—along the northwestern coastal areas of the Black Sea (in eastern Europe). Both pile and Kilim types use floral subject matter and a distinct coloration, with a dominant dark ground and accents in rose reds.
