About the Item

Antique French Botanical Needlepoint Carpet Doris Leslie Blau Size: 11'8" × 16'7" (355 × 505 cm) A stunning example of 19th-century French textile artistry, this antique needlepoint carpet from the 1880s beautifully blends botanical inspiration with meticulous handwork. Measuring an impressive, the carpet features an elaborate and symmetrical allover design composed of starburst floral medallions and stylized rosettes, meticulously stitched in a refined needlepoint technique. At its heart, the carpet showcases a field of alternating quatrefoil and octagonal floral motifs, rendered in a rich yet harmonious color palette: deep crimson, ochre gold, verdant green, soft lilac, and delicate powder blue. These repeating medallions rest on a pale beige ground, giving the composition both rhythm and clarity. The wide borders are a visual feast in their own right. They are adorned with ornate botanical vases, scrolling vines, and charming bouquets, exuding the elegance of French decorative arts of the late 19th century. The use of floral cornucopia and stylized acanthus scrolls suggests influence from both Louis XVI and Aubusson design traditions. Handmade in wool, the piece reveals fine detailing and remarkable craftsmanship in every stitch. Though entirely executed in the flat needlepoint style, the depth and layering of colors lend the illusion of texture and dimension. A rare piece from the Doris Leslie Blau Collection, this rug exemplifies superior artistry and tradition. Doris Leslie Blau offers a broad and varied pricing spectrum, accommodating collectors and designers across a range of budgets—from modest vintage finds to rare, museum-worthy masterpieces.
