About the Item
Handmade in wool circa 1850-1860, this 5x9 antique French needlepoint rug is a particularly rare addition to our European rug collection. Its design features intricate medallions and florals in an all over pattern with notable blue, red and beige-brown tones.
On the Design:
Admirers of the craft will note a Gothic sensibility in this rug’s interpretation of late neoclassical style. Its blues range from navy to lapis, and their variety plays beautifully with the burgundy and cream notes. It's a work of elegant presence, with a sense of dimension, movement and detail like few from this period in France.
Condition:
This antique needlepoint rug further enjoys good condition for its provenance. Past repairs include a linen backing and restitching in some areas—overall mild and consistent with its age and origin. It’s ready for the floor, and equally suitable for wall-hanging projects as a tapestry, too.
