Carpet developed at Johannes Itten's design course at the Bauhaus in Weimar

About the Item

Elio Palmisano's atelier represents one of the few Italian firms to have produced a large number of tapestries and carpets during the second half of the 20th century. From 1968 to 2005, Elio Palmisano created a collection of 352 subjects, including tapestries and rugs, designed by innovative artists and designers. The design of the rug we lend was developed during the Basic Course held by Johannes Itten at the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1920. Since it cannot be attributed with certainty to Itten as it is unsigned, it is assumed to have been executed by one of the students in the course, who remained anonymous.

20th Century White and Blue Alice in Wonderland Salvador Dalí Rug, ca 1977
By Ege Axminster A/S
Located in Firenze, IT
Probably there would have been no better artist to illustrate a story as beautiful as surreal, like that of Alice in Wonderland. Let’s talk about Salvador Dali (1904-1989), the Spanish artist who changed the concept of 20th-century art. As an admirer of Freud, Salvador Dali is known for the use of symbolism and recurring objects in all of his works. This carpet, made by the well-known EGE AXMINSTER carpet factory from a 1969 painting, presents Alice jumping rope in a long fluttering dress with her head and hands represented as a bouquet and her symbolic shadow figure next to her. The dark grid lines fixed on an ivory field vanish at an escape point behind the mountains in the distance. Birds, abstract figures and a smaller secondary person dot the background in the distance. Dali’s signature...

20th Century, Brown and Floreal Motifs Savonerie French Rug, ca 1920
Located in Firenze, IT
The term Savonerie identifies a series of carpets knotted with Turkish knot and adorned with floral designs, made in Europe in various manufactories. The most famous and the one that gives the name to these carpets was settled in Paris in an ancient soap factory. Its foundation was an attempt by France in the seventeenth century to reproduce the expensive oriental carpets, but the main feature of these carpets is the Western style decor, which introduced an absolute novelty in the furnishings of the time. The productions of Savonerie over the years have become multiple, the most popular in addition to the French are the Spanish and Austrian. They were manufactories created specifically to produce large carpets intended for sumptuous noble palaces. Since the end of the 19th century many manufactories have also begun to produce carpets of different sizes, always with a decoration dictated by a Western style furniture...
