Doris Leslie Blau Vintage Spanish Cuenca Rug

About the Item

Vintage Spanish Cuenca Rug – Elegant Pale Green Botanical Medallion on Cream Size: 9'8" × 14'0" (294 × 426 cm) This vintage Spanish Cuenca rug is a refined expression of classical design through the lens of mid-20th-century European craftsmanship. Woven circa 1950, the rug showcases a muted botanical motif in an ethereal blend of pale green against a soft ivory field. The understated palette lends the rug a delicate sophistication, allowing it to blend effortlessly into contemporary, minimalist, or traditionally styled interiors. The pattern features scrolling foliage and symmetrical flourishes rendered in low-contrast tones, resulting in a gently faded look that evokes a sense of timeless tranquility. Subtle variations in texture and tone enrich the visual depth, while a meandering vine border anchors the design with quiet structure. Crafted in the historic weaving tradition of Cuenca, Spain—renowned for its rich legacy of textile production—this piece exhibits fine handwoven technique using high-quality wool. Its subdued elegance makes it a compelling choice for designers seeking softness and quiet patterning without sacrificing artisan quality. A rare piece from the Doris Leslie Blau Collection, this rug exemplifies superior artistry and tradition. Doris Leslie Blau offers a broad and varied pricing spectrum, accommodating collectors and designers across a range of budgets—from modest vintage finds to rare, museum-worthy masterpieces.

Vintage Spanish Cuenca Rug with Renaissance Palmette Design
Located in Milan, IT
The court workshop called 'Real Fabrica de Tapices' has been active in Madrid since the 17th century, supplying handmade carpets woven with Turkish (symmetrical) knots to both the court as well as for export. Throughout the 20th century their carpets were either woven with French Savonnerie patterns or, as in this case, with designs taken from the Spanish Renaissance weaving tradition. These carpets are known in the trade with the term of 'Cuenca,' which is the city in southern Spain where they were originally woven in the 15th-17th centuries. Here the pattern, which has a raised pile with respect to the ivory background, is distinguished by an infinite repeat of curvilinear palmettes as seen on 15th-16th century Spanish Alcaraz carpets.
