Early 19th Century Handmade Brown Wool Floral French Aubusson Rug

About the Item

This antique French Aubusson rug features a tobacco-brown field with diagonal rows of light terracotta-orange floral motifs and a delicate similarly coloured scrolling outer band with an onion shaped lozenge in each corner around a large ivory central palmette with stylised pendants outlined in a narrow light terracotta-orange band of scrolling tendrils forming a central lozenge with ivory and soft terracotta-orange cusped lozenges each containing a central floral motif enclosed by a curved serrated leaf, surrounded by four ivory panels with charcoal-blue scrolling floral vine, in a charcoal-brown border of light terracotta-orange and ivory linked cartouches and delicate floral panels between terracotta-red and ivory plain stripes. French Aubusson rugs are elegant, handwoven tapestries that originated in the town of Aubusson, France, during the 17th century. Known for their delicate floral patterns, pastel colors, and intricate scrollwork, these rugs were originally made for French aristocracy. They often feature central medallions, ornate borders, and a soft, flat-woven texture. Aubusson rugs embody classic European sophistication and remain highly valued for their artistry and historical significance.
