French Art Deco Carpet by Ernest Boiceau 9' 4" x 10' - 285 x 305 cm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Signed E Boiceau Chenille flat-woven technique The buff field displays a large swirling 16 tassel openwork medallion created by a continuous twisted and knotted rope. The field corners reprise the basic concept with double tassels and knot-work. At the cardinal points are triple loop bows, with a twisted single rope all around. The palette is quite restrained, with accents in straw beige and pale slate blue. There is a wide, flat multi-cord selvage edging the carpet. The texture is thin and flexible. Ernest Boiceau (1881-1950) came from Switzerland, but set up in Paris around 1910, originally specializing in tapestry and costume, but later expanding to rugs and furniture in 1933. This carpet must be one of his earliest essays in that medium. His fashion origins are apparent in this carpet with its thin, textile texture and technique. His repertoire is broad, including medallions, as here; animal patterns; building plans; Chinese and classical motives; abstract compositions; and kaleidoscopic explosions. Both restrained and expansive poly chrome patterns are equally prominent. Boiceau signed many of his carpets. Continental Europe and American were his chief markets. This carpet is executed in the Cornely stitch, a sort of semi-mechanical chenille embroidery method. This makes it no less desirable and firmly fits it into the later Art Deco period in which bolder, simplified geometric forms came to predominate. The Post-war Modern style of the 1940’s is just beginning to appear. This carpet fits equally well decoratively into later Abstract Art Deco and Modern interiors. It should be noted that the actual carpet is lighter and less buff-salmon in tone than the accompanying image.
